NEWLY GRADUATED HEALTH PROFESSIONAL TRAINING: UNNECESSARY REPETITION THROUGH INTERNSHIP AND NYSC
CLICKRETHINKING AND SCRAPPING NYSC SERVICE FOR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL GRADUATES: A CALL FOR POLICY REFORM
In the face of changing national realities, it is imperative that the Nigerian government revisits the policy mandating fresh graduates—especially health professional graduates with HND and BSc—to undergo the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) after already completing a compulsory one-year internship. This double service obligation has outlived its purpose and presents both logistical and existential challenges to the nation’s emerging workforce. Below are key reasons why the current structure demands urgent review.
1. Internship Already Serves as National Service
: The one-year compulsory internship for health professionals—such as nurses, medical laboratory scientists, physiotherapists, pharmacists, radiographers, and others—is itself a national assignment. It is centrally regulated and deployed according to the manpower needs of each state. These interns work in hospitals and clinics across the country, often in rural or underserved areas, directly impacting the health system. This hands-on contribution to national development is not symbolic—it saves lives daily. Requiring them to go through NYSC again is redundant and fails to acknowledge their already significant national contribution.
2. Physical and Financial Exhaustion
It is becoming increasingly unfair to expect fresh graduates to relocate every year — first for internship, and then again for NYSC. This constant movement places financial strain, housing challenges, emotional stress, and administrative burdens on individuals who are just beginning their professional journey. After completing rigorous academic programs and demanding internship schedules, expecting another year of compulsory relocation undermines their economic stability and mental well-being.
3. Nigeria’s Security Realities: The insecurity in Nigeria today cannot be overlooked. Many NYSC members are posted to volatile regions where they face risks including kidnapping, banditry, religious discrimination, violence, and ethnic conflicts. Forcing fresh health professionals to serve in such environments shortly after internship places their lives at unnecessary risk. In a profession that already requires compassion and courage, exposing them to life-threatening national assignments is both unethical and insensitive.
